EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – If you’re ordering a new phone for home delivery, beware because some troublesome thieves are leaving local customers empty-handed.
It happened three times in the past week – and iPhones seem to be the favorite target of thieves.
In all three cases, a FedEx driver handed the package directly to the person who signed for it, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
On December 4, a 45-year-old Evans woman reported that she ordered an iPhone 16 through Xfinity and it was delivered by FedEx to an address on Iris Glen Drive. But her phone was gone. Strangely, her husband’s phone was not removed from the same packaging. Various types of tape were used on the outside of the box and had been tampered with, a deputy reported.
It was similar to what happened on December 5 in the 4300 block of Riverwatch Parkway. A 36-year-old woman ordered an iPhone 15 Plus from Xfinity. FedEx delivered the package and the driver handed the box directly to her, she told the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. The iPhone box was still in the packaging, but there was no phone included. A deputy noticed that different types of tape had been used on the top and bottom of the package.
The same thing happened to a resident of Pheasant Run Drive in Evans. On December 4, the 42-year-old woman received a package from Xfinity and delivered by FedEx that allegedly contained an iPhone 16. Two days later she opened it to wrap it for Christmas, but the seals were torn off. the iPhone box in the package and the phone was gone. Someone had removed the tape from the bottom of the package and reapplied it, an officer noted.
This appears to have been a sudden outbreak of the problem, as there were no similar reports in Columbia County in the past two weeks.
